Youth Mental Health First Aid Training - Geelong

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training - Geelong
Did you know that one in four young Australians currently have a mental health condition? Did you know that half of all mental health disorders start by the age of 14? Did you know that some of these young Australians will be in your Girl Guide unit?

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is designed for adults working or living with adolescents (those aged between 12 and 18 years), however, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older. The course is not only relevant for your volunteering as a Girl Guide Leader, but will also undoubtedly prove useful in your everyday life.

The course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

A grant from the Victorian State Government is subsidising these courses for Girl Guides Victoria volunteers. These courses are therefore being offered to members of Girl Guides Victoria ‘at cost’, with a view to being as accessible as possible. Your $45 registration fee includes a full-colour handbook.

This is a 14 hour training which is being offered over two full day sessions over one weekend. It is compulsory to attend the entire weekend of training.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.

There is an option to stay overnight at the Guide Hall or nearby on Saturday night. You will need to provide your own bedding, and all meals will be self-catered. Please contact Geelong District Manager Belinda George if you wish to discuss this option.

Places are limited. Register today to avoid disappointment.
